Ishmael Edjekumhene, a commissioner of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, has refuted allegations made by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) about around 360 transformers that are overloaded.

His remarks follow the imposition of a substantial punishment on previous ECG board members by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for their failure to warn customers in advance of power outages, as required by Regulation 39 of L.I. 2413.

The Executive Director of the Kumasi Institute of Technology and Environment (KITE), Mr. Edjekumhene, expressed his astonishment at the revelation made by the Managing Director of ECG that 630 transformers were overloaded, resulting in sporadic power outages, while speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show.

Despite routine monitoring, this allegation was not previously disclosed to the PURC.

Therefore, we were only investigating material that ECG had released into the public realm without the regulator's knowledge. Therefore, if that wasn't the case, the ECG should have said as much when we wrote to them. However, they provided us with every detail.

It seems that none of the transformers, or at least most of them, were overloaded after we reached out to them all. For this reason, GRIDCO claimed to have issued instructions, and ECG was failing to follow them promptly.
